Martine O'Malley
Glass

I find my imagery in objects that are about to be discarded; the old spider´s web, the daddy-long-legs that has come to the end of his life, the dried and shriveled flower or leaf, and turn them into something of beauty. What one person perceives as rubbish I see as an object of beauty and worthy of working with.

Spiders, their webs and prey are captured and then enlarged to display a structure and a detail often not visible to the naked eye. This enlargement enables the observer to appreciate the natural beauty of subjects through a variety of media. I use silk-screening, etching and sandblasting to produce my finished work on paper, glass, plaster and resin.

I entered the art world late in life, undertaking a Foundation course and then a Fine Art Degree at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design University College, Farnham, graduating in 2000 in my 50th year.
